COVID-19 related closures of schools and businesses created an urgent need for Internet access to conduct distance learning, apply for jobs, attend telemedicine appointments, file for government benefits, stay informed about COVID-related developments and other news, and connect virtually with loved ones. The pandemic also closed most public libraries, which cut off many people’s only reliable source of free Internet. While Alabama’s public libraries have resumed operations, COVID-19 emphasized the harm the Digital Divide causes to underserved communities and underscored the need to proactively create services that help close the gap before the next crisis arises. This project, in part, addresses the Digital Divide in many of Alabama’s most underserved rural communities by providing mobile hotspots to select Alabama public libraries. This will: (1) empower public libraries in areas of low household broadband connectivity, which are often poor and rural counties, to serve a need made all the more urgent by the COVID-19 pandemic; and, (2), empower local libraries in these communities to proactively maintain a lifeline to online information in the event of additional COVID-19 closures or a future crisis, whether disease or natural disaster, by enabling the circulation of mobile hotspots to patrons. This project was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, grant number LS-250192-OLS-21, and by Alabama Public Library Service. Click the image to review policy.
In 2021, the library made the decision to eliminate fines. This means you will no longer receive a daily fine on overdue items. You are still responsible for returning your items. A series of overdue reminders will be sent according to your contact preference. Library materials still have a two week check out period and can be renewed twice, except if the item is on reserve for another patron. After materials are 30 days overdue, they will be considered lost, and the patron will be charged a replacement cost. If the materials are returned in the same condition as when checked out, the replacement cost will be waived. You are still responsible for damaged material.
Access to libraries is one of the keys to improving literacy rates and the Cherokee County Public Library Board of Trustees and Director, Dana Carroll, feel that the weight of fines can drive some of our patrons away. We want to remove this barrier and encourage everyone to utilize all that the library has to offer. Communities are stronger and healthier when people have access to the programs, services, and materials they need. We hope this will encourage prior users to come back to the library as well as attract new users to explore what Cherokee County Public Library has to offer.
From its early days in the basement of the Cherokee County Courthouse, to its home since 1974 at 310 Mary Street, the Cherokee County Public Library has served the information needs of residents and guests in and around Cherokee County. We offer services ranging from fax and interlibrary loan to our large genealogy room. Here you will find a program slate for children, teens, and adults, a 20 station computer lab, and access to a continually changing collection of materials.
The Cherokee County Public Library's mission is to enrich the lives of its community members by empowering each individual in personal, educational, and professional growth. The library is committed to improving literacy and fostering lifelong learning by connecting the community with access to information, ideas, and knowledge through books, programs, technology, and gathering spaces.
We couldn't accomplish our goals without the help of supporters like you. Thank you for all of your support! Whether it's physical or monetary contributions or your time as a volunteer, we at CCPL appreciate all of our patrons. We are here to serve you!
